Privacy Policy
Last updated: July 1, 2026
Decompute is a cost-control gateway for Claude that runs on your own machine. Privacy isn't a setting we added — it's the architecture. This policy explains what we do and don't collect, and the choices you have.
The short version
- Your prompts, code, and file contents are processed locally and are never sent to Decompute.
- You bring your own Claude key or subscription; it stays on your machine in an owner-only file.
- Product telemetry is aggregate and anonymized (counts and totals — never content) and you can turn it off with one command.
- We don't sell your data, and we don't host Claude — requests go from your machine to Anthropic under your own credentials.
01Who we are & scope
This Privacy Policy describes how Decompute ("Decompute", "we", "us") handles information in connection with the Decompute website, the Decompute command-line tools and gateway software, the VS Code extension, and related services (together, the "Services"). By using the Services you agree to this policy together with our Terms & Conditions.
Anthropic, Claude, and Claude Code are trademarks of Anthropic. Decompute optimizes Claude traffic; it does not host or provide Claude, and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Anthropic. When you use Decompute to reach Claude, your use of Claude is also governed by Anthropic's own terms and privacy policy.
02Local-first processing
The Decompute gateway runs on your own device. Compression, routing, redaction, and the local student–teacher loop all execute locally. Decompute issues no API key of its own — you supply your own Anthropic API key, or use your own Claude Pro/Max subscription. Credentials are stored in owner-only files on your machine and are never transmitted to Decompute.
03Information we collect
a. Information you provide
If you contact us (for example by emailing support) we receive the information you choose to share, such as your email address and message. If you purchase a paid plan, our payment processor collects your billing details (see Third-party services); we receive confirmation of your subscription and a limited billing record, not your full card number.
b. Aggregate product telemetry
The gateway can send a periodic, aggregate usage report so we can understand adoption and improve the product. It contains coarse counts and totals only — for example request counts, aggregate token and savings totals, the software version, and basic platform information (such as operating system family). It is designed to carry no prompts, no code, no file contents, no file paths, and no API keys. See Product telemetry & opt-out for what it includes and how to disable it.
c. Website usage
When you visit our website, our hosting and infrastructure providers process standard technical data (such as IP address, browser type, and pages requested) to serve the site securely and reliably.
04Your prompts & code
The content you send through the gateway — prompts, source code, logs, diffs, and tool output — is processed locally to compress and route it, and is then sent to Anthropic to fulfill your request, under your own credentials. Decompute does not receive, store, or transmit this content to itself.
To reduce what leaves your machine, the gateway can tokenize personal information and redact secrets before a request is sent upstream. These protections are configurable (for example decompute config-set privacy.pii_mode tokenize and privacy.secret_mode redact). They are best-effort safeguards and do not replace your own review of sensitive data.
05Product telemetry & opt-out
Aggregate telemetry (described in 3b) is enabled by default and is anonymized — it is not used to identify you, and it excludes the content of your work. You can turn it off at any time:
- Run
decompute telemetry offto disable the aggregate beacon. - Run
decompute telemetry statusto see the current setting.
Disabling telemetry does not affect your ability to use the Services.
06Third-party services
We rely on a small number of providers to deliver the Services. Your data is handled by them under their own privacy policies:
- Anthropic — processes the requests you send to Claude through the gateway, under your own account/credentials.
- Stripe — processes payments for paid plans; card details are handled by Stripe, not stored by us.
- Cloudflare — distributes the installer and software and stores aggregate telemetry.
- Vercel — hosts this website.
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it with third parties for their own advertising.
07Website & cookies
The marketing website uses only the cookies and storage necessary to operate and secure the site and, where applicable, to complete a checkout. The gateway software itself does not use advertising cookies.
08Data retention
We keep information only as long as needed for the purposes described here: support correspondence for as long as needed to assist you, billing records for as long as required for tax and accounting, and aggregate telemetry for as long as it is useful for product analytics. Because aggregate telemetry is anonymized, it cannot be tied back to you.
09Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or port your personal information, and to object to or restrict certain processing. Because your prompts and code never reach us and telemetry is anonymized, the personal data we hold is generally limited to support correspondence and billing records. To exercise any right, contact us at help@decompute.run and we will respond consistent with applicable law (including GDPR and CCPA where they apply). You can opt out of analytics at any time as described above.
10Security
We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect information. Locally, credentials are stored in owner-only files and written atomically. No method of storage or transmission is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.
11Children
The Services are intended for developers and are not directed to children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 16.
12Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "Last updated" date above and, for material changes, provide a more prominent notice where appropriate.
